How To Catch Spanish Mackeral

Spanish MackerelSpanish Mackerel are one of my favourite fish to catch and with a bit of practice, are readily available and great sport to match.

Check out our following pages and some of the different techniques which you can try.

There’s a million ways you can do it and all work to varying levels of success, so well worth a look, and adapt to suit your method of fishing.

The beauty is with these techniques, they will also work with other pelagics such as Tuna, Giant Trevally (GT’s), Queenfish, and other smaller mackerel species. When one technique isn’t working, don’t be afraid to try something else.

There’s nothing like the screaming first run of a 20kg + Spanish Mackerel, belting your lure or live bait and heading for the horizon. You’ve got to love the sound of a screaming ratchet and a rod bent double over.

The great part of fishing, you never know what will turn up next, with the following methods also very effective on a large range of reef fish and pelagics, such as Tuna, smaller mackerel species and heaps more.

Trolling Lures And Rigged Bait
Trolling for Spanish Mackerel is one of the best ways to work an area and find the fish, Once the lures and baits are out, sit back and relax and wait for all hell to break loose. You can’t beat a swimming Gar or Wolf Herring.

Livebaiting For Spanish Mackerel
Always try and have a livebait out, whilst reef fishing under a balloon, one of the easiest ways to catch quality Spanish Mackerel, whilst also getting a good feed of reef fish. They just can’t help themselves to a live stripey or Fusilier.

Casting & Jigging
A bit more effort involved but can make all the difference, when the fishing is slow and the other techniques aren’t working. High speed retrieve of a metal chrome jig and a mackerel can’t help itself, it just has to smash it.

Floating Baits
Another easy method, and something we’ll have out whilst fishing, is a floating Gar or Pilchard, very deadly and accounts for quite a lot of nice Spanish Mackerel, Too easy, so always pay a flick out a bait.

Check out our Spanish Mackerel pages for each technique, as all these techniques are well worth a try, you know the fish are there, You’ve just have to hook them, next problem and the fun part trying to get them to the boat.

Good luck!! And Good Fishing....
