Spanish Mackerel Shoot-Out 2009

Spanish Mackerel Weigh In Mackay Fishing ClubThe much anticipated 2009 JG Marine Spanish Shoot-Out was contested over the weekend of 4th and 5th July 2009.

The 20-25knot winds meant for trying times as 86 registered anglers did their best to land the biggest Spanish Mackerel they could find.

With many reports of people trying every trick they knew to come up empty handed, credit must be given to the team on board “Somewhere”, skippered by Dennis Breadsell, who managed to get Mick Rethus hooked up to, not one but, two impressive Spanish Mackerel, to take out 1st and 2nd prize ($1000 cash from JG Marine and $400 Nashy Compleat angler voucher) with a 28.5kg and 24.4 kg Spanish Mackerel, and Cec Dinsdale who also landed another large Spanish of 16.9kg.

Steve Bridson Spanish MackerelThe Bridson family also had a big day out on Saturday with the father and son team of Steve and Zac landing 2 sizable fish each.

Steve managed to score himself 3rd place in the senior division with a 21.20kg Mackerel and Zac took out the Junior Heaviest Spanish Mackerel division with a 14.4kg fish to win himself a $250 Barra Pro voucher.

Mark Jorgensen caught himself a 13.50kg Cod to win a $250 Barra Pro Rod and Reel as the Heaviest other fish in the Junior section of the competition.

MackerelThe mystery weight section saw Todd Koina score a Reefari 1 Day Reef fishing trip with his 11.7kg Mackerel being the closest to the 12kg mystery mark in the senior male division, the female senior divison had no entries lodged.

The junior mystery weight prize of a $100 Nashy’s Compleat Angler Rod and Reel was won by Jonique Ramsamy with her Coarl trout of 2.20kg landing closest to the mystery mark of 2kg.

A crowd of well over 100 people attended the final weigh in and presentations held on Sunday 5th July at the Mackay Surf Club. Once again this year the DPI attended the weigh in sessions and showed the public how they go about their research into determining fish length, age and sex and how the public can get involved in their research activities.

Once again the Mackay Game Fishing Club would like to thank all of the tournament sponsors JG Marine, Reefari, Nashy’s Compleat Angler, Barra Pro, Tackle World, Sea FM, Hot FM, Chunk Ice, Walter Wright Cranes and R Jayz Berley for their contribution to the event and the people of Mackay that made the event the success that is has been. No doubt we will all be lining up in 2010 to do it all again.
